Polish Catholic bishop (1865–1950)
Who they were
Adolf Piotr Szelążek was born at Stoczek Łukowski in Podlasie, Poland, on 30 July 1865 and ordained priest in Płock Cathedral on 26 May 1888. He was consecrated auxiliary bishop of Płock on 24 November 1918 and appointed Bishop of Łuck (Lutsk) in Volhynia on 14 December 1925. In 1936 he founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus.
On the night of 3-4 January 1945 he was arrested by the NKVD and held in Łuck and Kyiv. Released on 14 May 1946, he was deported to Poland. He died at Zamek Bierzgłowski on 9 February 1950 and was buried in the crypt of St James's Church in Toruń. The Diocese of Toruń opened his cause on 6 October 2013 and closed its diocesan phase on 4 September 2016.
