Agnes of Assisi

Who they were

Agnes, younger sister of St Clare, was born at Assisi in 1197 or 1198, daughter of Count Favorino Scifi and Blessed Hortulana. Sixteen days after Clare left home to follow St Francis in 1212, Agnes joined her at the monastery of Sant'Angelo in Panzo.

Her enraged father sent armed relatives to drag her back, but she held firm and shared her sister's life of poverty and penance, later becoming abbess of the Poor Ladies. She died in 1253.

There was never a formal cause: she has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
