Alain de Solminihac

Who they were

Alain de Solminihac, of an old family of Périgord, first meant to join the Knights of Malta but in 1613, aged twenty, entered the abbey of Chancelade near Périgueux, held by the Canons Regular of St Augustine. As abbot from 1623 he restored the abbey materially and spiritually.

In 1636 Pope Urban VIII named him Bishop of Cahors, where through constant pastoral visits he worked to reform the morals of the people and renew the Church entrusted to him. He died on 31 December 1659.

Why that counted as sanctity

A reforming abbot and bishop of the Catholic renewal after Trent, who renewed a monastery and a diocese by his own zeal and example.
