Who they were
Albert was Bishop of Riga and is called the Apostle of Livonia. After the Livonians had twice lapsed into paganism, he led an expedition up the Daugava in 1200, founded the city of Riga in 1201 and became its bishop.
He established the Knights of the Sword in 1202, completed the conversion of the country before 1206 and set up the dependent sees of Semigallia-Courland, Dorpat and Ösel. He died on 17 January 1229.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
