Who they were
Gaietana Alberta Giménez Adrover was born at Pollença, Majorca, on 6 August 1837. She trained as a teacher in Palma and in 1860 married the teacher Francisco Civera; of their four children only one reached adulthood. Widowed in 1869, in 1870 she was put in charge of the Pureza de María school for girls in Palma, which she renewed.
From 1872 to 1912 she also directed the women teachers' training college. For the women who helped her she founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Purity of Mary, approved by the bishop in 1892, with her as first superior general until illness made her step down in 1916. She died in Palma on 21 December 1922.
