Alberto Hurtado
Chilean Jesuit saint (1901-1952)

Who they were
Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga was born at Viña del Mar, Chile, on 22 January 1901. His father died when he was four, and his mother had to sell their small property to pay the family's debts, so he grew up moving between relatives and knew early what it was to be poor and without a home.
He became a Jesuit, was ordained on 24 August 1933 and took a doctorate in education and psychology in 1935. He founded a work to give a real home to the homeless and to vagrants, above all children.
