Who they were
Aldegund, related to the Merovingian royal family, was the daughter of Sts Walbert and Bertilia of Hainaut. Urged to marry, she chose virginity and received the veil from St Amand, Bishop of Maastricht.
She built a small convent at a lonely place called Malbode on the Sambre, which became the famous abbey of Maubeuge. She died in 684.

There was never a formal cause: she has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
