Who they were
Alessandro Sauli was born of an old Genoese family on 15 February 1534. Turning down a brilliant career at the court of Charles V, he joined the Clerics Regular of St Paul (the Barnabites) at seventeen, and in a first act of obedience walked through the merchants' square in noble dress carrying a heavy cross.
He became theologian to the bishop and dean of theology at Pavia, then Superior General of his order, and later Bishop of Aleria in Corsica and of Pavia, where he relieved the poor with remarkable charity.
