Who they were
Alfonsa Clerici was born at Lainate, near Milan, on 14 February 1860, into a family of deep Christian faith. While training as a teacher at the college of the Sisters of the Most Precious Blood of Monza she decided to give herself wholly to God, and entered their novitiate on 15 August 1883.
She served as teacher and then head of the college, and helped steer her institute through a financial crisis in the early 1900s. At the Archbishop of Vercelli's request she then ran the diocesan Istituto della Provvidenza, which took in and educated girls from the poorest families, for about nineteen years.
