Almedha

Who they were

Almedha (Eluned), who lived about 490, was a daughter of Brychan, the British prince after whom Brecknock is named, and was remembered in Wales.

Giraldus Cambrensis tells of her church on a hill near Brecon: she 'rejected the marriage of an earthly prince, espoused herself to the eternal King, and consummated her course by a triumphant martyrdom'. Pilgrims came in crowds on her feast, 1 August, and many miracles were reported.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: she has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

A Welsh princess who chose Christ over an earthly marriage and died a martyr.
