Who they were
Elisabeth Eppinger was born at Niederbronn-les-Bains, Alsace, on 9 September 1814, eldest of eleven children of a devout country family. Often bedridden for months, she felt a burden to her family and spent her solitude with God in prayer and adoration.
As Mother Alphonse-Marie she founded the Sisters of the Most Holy Saviour; soon fourteen more houses followed, and in the Crimean War her sisters consoled the dying. A brave and wise woman, suffering, silent and praying, she witnessed to God's love above all to the sick in body and spirit.
