Who they were
Amato Ronconi was born around 1226 at Saludecio, in the diocese of Rimini, the second child of devout farmers. Resolved to give his life to God and his neighbour, he refused the marriage his sister-in-law arranged for him and was mocked as a madman and falsely accused for it.
A member of the Third Order of St Francis, he founded the hospital for poor pilgrims at Saludecio, still a home for the elderly that bears his name. He died aged almost 66.
The miracles
He was called Blessed or Saint without interruption from 1304; his veneration was confirmed as existing from time immemorial. The biography does not describe the miracle for his canonisation.
Why that counted as sanctity
A Franciscan layman who spent his life and his inheritance on poor pilgrims, honoured by his people for seven centuries.
