Ambrose Traversari
Italian monk and theologian (1386–1439)

Who they were
Ambrose Traversari was born at Portico near Florence on 16 September 1386, entered the Camaldolese at fourteen and became their General in 1431. A great theologian and writer, he knew Greek as well as Latin.
Sent by Eugene IV to the Council of Basel, he strongly defended the primacy of the Roman pontiff and begged the council not to tear Christ's seamless robe. At the Councils of Ferrara and Florence he worked for the union of the Greek and Latin Churches. He died on 21 October 1439.
