Who they were
Andrzej Bobola was born at Sandomierz in Poland on 30 November 1591 to a noble family known for its constancy in the Catholic faith, and was educated in the schools of the Society of Jesus, which he joined.
A Jesuit priest, he worked tirelessly for the unity of Christians until he was seized by soldiers and gave the highest witness of faith by shedding his blood. Pope Pius XII wrote an encyclical on the third centenary of his martyrdom.
