Who they were
Angela was born at Foligno on 4 January 1248 to a well-off family and spent her youth far from the faith. She married a notable of Foligno and had several children. The earthquake of 1279, a great storm and the long war with Perugia made her face the fragility of life.
After her mother, her husband and her children died, she sold everything, gave the money to the poor, went on pilgrimage to Assisi and in 1291 entered the Third Order of St Francis. Her mystical experiences are told in the Memoriale written by her director, Brother Arnaldo.
The miracles
Pope Francis canonised her on 9 October 2013, completing what his predecessors had begun. The biography does not describe a miracle.
Why that counted as sanctity
A worldly woman converted to total self-giving, who learned to live holiness in the ordinary things of each day.
