Who they were
At Nicomedia in Bithynia, in present-day Turkey, Saint Anthimus, bishop, and companions, martyrs: during the persecution of the emperor Diocletian, for having professed faith in Christ he received the glory of martyrdom by beheading, followed by many members of his flock, of whom by order of the judge some were beheaded with the sword, others burned with fire, and others finally put on small boats and drowned in the sea.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 24 April as a bishop of Nicomedia beheaded under Diocletian, followed in martyrdom by many of his flock.
