Who they were
Anton Durcovici was born on 17 May 1888 at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in Austria to a modest family. He entered the seminary of Bucharest in 1901, took a doctorate in theology in Rome and was ordained in the Lateran basilica on 24 September 1910.
Rector of the Bucharest seminary from 1924, he was named Bishop of Iași by Pius XII in 1948. Persecuted by Romania's communist regime, he died of hardship in Sighetu Marmației prison in 1951, probably on 10 December.
The miracles
As a martyr he was beatified without a miracle. Cardinal Angelo Amato presided at the beatification on behalf of Pope Francis.

A zealous and brave pastor who stayed faithful to Christ and the Church under persecution until death in prison.
