Who they were
Antonia Maria Verna was born at Pasquaro, near Rivarolo Canavese, on 12 June 1773, to a humble farming family. As a girl she gathered the neighbours' children while their parents worked in the fields, teaching them the catechism and their prayers, and at fifteen she vowed perpetual virginity.
At about 25 she moved to Rivarolo, caring for children, the sick and the poor, and young women joined her. Though an adult, she went back to school to serve them better, and in 1806 she first asked leave to found the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception of Ivrea.
