Who they were
Artemide Zatti was born at Boretto, near Reggio Emilia, on 12 October 1880, and was working as a farm labourer at nine. Poverty drove his family to emigrate to Argentina, to Bahía Blanca, when he was a teenager. He joined the Salesians, and caught tuberculosis while caring for a young sick priest.
Sent to Viedma in Patagonia for the climate, he was advised by the Salesian nurse who ran the mission hospital to entrust himself to Mary Help of Christians. He recovered, and as a Salesian brother gave the rest of his life to the sick poor in the hospital at Viedma, with great generosity, patience and humility. He died on 15 March 1951.
The miracles
A young Salesian — Argentina — 18 April 1980
A young Salesian had grave complications after a burst appendix, with infection throughout the abdomen and chest, general sepsis and a collapsed immune system. He was healed unexpectedly and inexplicably on 18 April 1980.
A man — Philippines — August 2016
A man suffered a stroke in the cerebellum complicated by a large haemorrhage. He recovered, and on 1 July 2021 the Vatican's medical board found the healing scientifically inexplicable.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a young Salesian was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle, opening the way to beatification. Beatification followed on 14 April 2002 by John Paul II. The case of a man was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 9 April 2022, opening the way to canonisation. Canonisation followed on 9 October 2022 by Francis.
