Who they were
Commemoration of Saint Athanasius of Jerusalem, deacon of the church of the Resurrection and martyr, slain by the heretic monk Theodosius because he had rebuked his impiety and defended the holy Council of Chalcedon against its opponents.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 5 July as a deacon of the church of the Resurrection killed for defending the Council of Chalcedon.
