Augustinus Zhao Rong
Chinese presbyter
Feast: 9 July (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Augustine Zhao Rong, a priest, is honoured with 119 companions, among them Bishop Pedro Sans i Jordá: martyrs who in different times and places in China, from 1648 to 1930, witnessed to the Gospel by word and life and died for preaching or professing the faith.
The first of them, the Dominican Francisco Fernández de Capillas, was beheaded on 15 January 1648 in Fujian while praying the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary.
The miracles
As martyrs they were canonised without the usual miracles.
Why that counted as sanctity
Chinese and missionary martyrs who over three centuries chose death rather than deny Christ.
