Who they were
Brother Augusto Andrés (Román Martínez Fernández) was born in Santander on 6 May 1910. His mother at first opposed his vocation, but after a grave illness he entered the novitiate of the Brothers of the Christian Schools at Bujedo and made his first vows on 15 August 1927.
He had been at the Brothers' school at Turón, in Asturias, for about a year when revolutionaries seized the community on 5 October 1934. In the early hours of 9 October he was shot at the cemetery with his fellow Brothers and a Passionist priest. He is one of the Martyrs of Turón, canonised in 1999.
