Aunarius

Who they were

Aunarius, of noble birth, was brought up at the royal court but chose the clerical state; ordained by St Syagrius of Autun, he became Bishop of Auxerre.

He ordered solemn litanies in rotation through his diocese, required daily attendance at the Divine Office by the clergy, and held a synod to restore discipline and suppress pagan superstitions. He died in 603 and has always been held in veneration at Auxerre.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

A bishop who renewed the prayer and discipline of his Church.
