Who they were
Bartholomew Gutiérrez was a priest of the Order of Hermits of Saint Augustine. With five companions he was first plunged into boiling sulphur springs and then burned at the stake at Nagasaki, out of hatred for the Christian faith, on 3 September 1632. The Holy See names him among the leaders of the 205 martyrs of Japan.
He is one of the 205 martyrs killed in Japan for the Catholic faith between 1617 and 1632 whom Pius IX declared Blessed on 7 July 1867.
