Who they were
Vasiľ Hopko was born at Hrabské, near Bardejov in Slovakia, on 21 April 1904, studied at the Greek Catholic theological academy of Prešov and was ordained on 3 February 1929. He became auxiliary Greek Catholic bishop of Prešov.
Under a regime hostile to Christ and the Church he was interned in monasteries, arrested on 18 October 1950 and, after more than a year of cruel interrogation, sentenced on 24 October 1951. He was released with his health ruined in 1964, and the long illness brought on by torture stayed with him until his death in 1976.

A Byzantine-rite bishop who kept serving his faithful under persecution and bore torture and lifelong illness for it.
