Basilides

Who they were

Basilides was a court officer at Alexandria who led the virgin martyr Potamiana to execution under Septimius Severus. He protected her from the mocking crowd, and she promised to pray for him after her death.

Soon afterwards he refused to take an oath, confessed that he was a Christian and was imprisoned. He told visitors that Potamiana had appeared to him and set a crown on his head. He was baptised, and beheaded the next day.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

A soldier won to Christ by the martyr he escorted, who then died for Him himself.
