Who they were
Benedict, a Roman, was trained in the schola cantorum and as a priest was known for his humility, love of the poor and generosity. He became pope on 26 June 684.
He obtained from the emperor a decree to shorten the delays in confirming new popes, worked against Monothelitism, supported St Wilfrid of York, and restored many Roman churches. He died on 8 May 685 and was buried in St Peter's.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

A humble pope devoted to the poor and to the unity of the faith.
