Who they were
Benignus (Benen), son of an Irish chieftain of Meath, was baptised by St Patrick and became his favourite disciple, companion and, from 450, coadjutor at Armagh.
Known as 'Patrick's psalm-singer', he drew many to Christ by his sweet voice and helped form the choral services. He resigned in 467 and died at the end of that year.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
