Basque-born Passionist priest who spent his life serving poor parishes in the Dominican Republic

A professed priest of the Congregation of the Passion under the name Benedict of Saint Paul of the Cross, he worked with the sick and with refugees, including at Bethany in the Holy Land, and after arriving in the Dominican Republic organised electricity, a post office, schools, roads, rural chapels and dispensaries, and cared for patients in the psychiatric and tuberculosis hospitals.

Why that counted as sanctity
The Passionist general curia lists him among its Servants of God (1907-1975) and records that the diocesan inquiry into his cause closed in 2007; the competent forum was Santo Domingo.
