Who they were
Angelo Ercole Menni was born and baptised in Milan on 11 March 1841, the fifth of fifteen children. He joined the Hospitaller Order of St John of God as Benedetto.
Sent to Spain in 1867, he restored the Order of St John of God there and founded the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the sick, disabled and elderly, above all those with mental illness; at his canonisation the sisters ran over 100 centres in 24 countries.
