Who they were
Bernard Lemaire was a layman born at Gonneville-la-Mallet on 27 July 1920 and baptised in the parish there on 3 August; a carpenter at Le Havre, he helped found a new parish and in 1938 joined the Young Christian Workers, founding its parish section and becoming departmental treasurer and a federal member. Taken first into the Organisation Todt and then into the compulsory labour service, he left for the Cologne area on 20 July 1943 and died at Buchenwald on 11 October 1944. He was beatified on 13 December 2025 by Pope Leo XIV.
