Who they were
Bruno, born at Solero in Piedmont about 1048, was a canon of Siena whose learning and piety brought him to Rome as counsellor to four popes. At a Roman synod in 1079 he made Berengarius retract his denial of the Real Presence. Gregory VII consecrated him Bishop of Segni in 1080; in humility he declined the cardinalate.
Called 'the brilliant defender of the Church', he fought lay investiture with courage. In 1102 he became a monk of Monte Cassino and in 1107 its abbot, and laboured for his flock until his death in 1123.
