Who they were
Caius was bishop of Rome for twelve years, from 17 December 283 to 22 April 296, in the time of peace before the last great persecution. Nothing else is known of his life. The fourth-century list of papal burials records him, not as a martyr, buried in the chapel of the popes in the catacomb of St Callixtus.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: Caius has been honoured as a saint since the early Church. He shares the date of 22 April with Pope St Soter.
Why that counted as sanctity
Caius shepherded the Church of Rome through the last years of peace before Diocletian's persecution.
