Camilla Battista da Varano
Italian saint, Clarissa, mystic and humanist (1548-1524)

Who they were
Camilla da Varano was born at Camerino on 9 April 1458, daughter of Prince Giulio Cesare da Varano; though born outside marriage she grew up in her father's palace and was well educated. At eight or ten, after a sermon by Friar Domenico da Leonessa, she vowed to meditate on the Lord's Passion every Friday and shed at least one tear.
As Sister Battista she became a Poor Clare, founded the Monastery of St Clare at Camerino and was its abbess. Her life was marked by great sufferings and mystical consolations.
