Married layman, martyr of the persecution in Spain
Who they were
Cándido Castán San José was a married layman and father of a family, born on 5 August 1894 at Benifayó de Espioca in the province and diocese of Valencia; he married Francisca Guiral Sorlí on 4 June 1919 and they had a daughter in 1920 and a son in 1928, and he belonged to the Madrid section of the Nocturnal Adorers and sat in the National Assembly of the Congress of Deputies for the confederation of Catholic workers. Put under house arrest as a Catholic on 23 July 1936 at Pozuelo de Alarcón and then moved to the Oblates' house there, he was killed at dawn on 24 July 1936 at La Casa de Campo near Madrid with the Oblates who had been his companions in prison, and was beatified with the Spanish martyrs of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate on 17 December 2011 by Benedict XVI.
