Carlo Bascapè

Who they were

Carlo Bascapè, baptised John Francis, was born at Melegnano near Milan on 25 October 1550. A lawyer who became a priest and helper of Saint Charles Borromeo, he joined the Barnabites in 1578, became their Superior General in 1584, and wrote the life of Saint Charles.

Chosen Bishop of Novara in 1593, he worked to put the reforms of the Council of Trent into practice, cared for the training of priests, founded the Oblates of Saint Gaudentius and served the poor, the sick and orphans. He died on 6 October 1615, and Benedict XVI declared his virtues heroic on 19 December 2005.
