Who they were
Caterina Tomàs i Gallard was born at Valldemossa on Majorca on 1 May 1531 and was orphaned at seven. Living with her uncle and aunt, she had to mind the livestock, which left her little time to pray in church.
At twenty she entered the Canonesses Regular of St Augustine in Palma, where she stood out for her mystical gifts and her complete forgetfulness of self.
