Who they were
Alessandra Lucrezia Romola de' Ricci was born in Florence on 25 April 1523 and lost her mother at five. Against her father's wishes, at fourteen she entered the monastery of San Vincenzo at Prato.
There, as Sister Caterina of the Third Order Regular of St Dominic, she worked for religious renewal and contemplated the Passion of Christ, of which she had a special mystical experience; her ecstasies at first made her sisters wary. She died in 1590.
