Bishop of Digne who inspired Victor Hugo's Bishop Myriel
Who they were
Bishop of Digne from 1805 to 1838, he gave most of his income to the poor and was the model for Mgr Myriel in Les Misérables. He was born and died at Aix-en-Provence, in France (not Italy).

Why that counted as sanctity
After the French bishops authorised the cause in November 2023 and Rome granted the nihil obstat, Bishop Emmanuel Gobilliard of Digne opened the diocesan phase in 2024; Aleteia states he is now Serviteur de Dieu.
