Ciarán of Saigir

Who they were

Kieran, apostle and patron of Ossory, was born near Cape Clear. According to tradition he went to Rome and was ordained priest and bishop, and met St Patrick, who gave him a bell and told him to found a monastery where it first rang.

The bell sounded on the western slopes of Slieve Bloom, and there he founded Seir-Kieran, from which Ossory was evangelised.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
