Clemens Maria Hofbauer
Redemptorist, saint of the Catholic Church (1751–1820)

Who they were
Johannes Hofbauer was born on 26 December 1751 at Tasswitz, in today's Czech Republic. Longing to be a priest, he had to take up the family trade as a baker when his father died; later he found the money to study theology and philosophy in Vienna.
In 1785 he was ordained a Redemptorist. He worked wonderfully to spread the faith in distant lands and renew church life, and drew many eminent scholars and artists to the Church.

Why that counted as sanctity
A baker turned Redemptorist who renewed the Church's life and won hearts among the learned.
