Crispin of Viterbo
Italian Capuchin (1668-1750)
Feast: 19 May (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Pietro Fioretti was born at Viterbo on 13 November 1668 and lost his father while still small. He went to school, then entered the Capuchins as Brother Crispin.
In convents across Lazio, and at Orvieto for about forty years, he did the humble, heavy work of infirmarian, cook, gardener and questor, teaching the peasants the rudiments of faith as he begged in the mountain villages. His joy and courtesy became proverbial. Told death was near, he said he would not die on 18 May so as not to spoil the feast of St Felix; he died the next day.
The miracles
The Dicastery's biography does not describe the miracles approved in the cause.
Why that counted as sanctity
A cheerful Capuchin brother given wholly to others in humble work and teaching the faith.
