Who they were
Neelakandan Pillai was born on 23 April 1712 in the Kingdom of Travancore, in southern India, into the high Nair caste, and was educated accordingly. He became a Christian, taking the name Lazarus, Devasahayam in Tamil.
In a persecution of Christians in Travancore he was put to death for renouncing Hinduism: he was shot, and the executioners fired twice more to make sure, then threw his body into the forest. He died on 14 January 1752, and is the first Indian layman to be canonised.
The miracles
An unborn baby — Tamil Nadu, India — 2013
A pregnant woman found that her baby had stopped moving in the 24th week. A Catholic devoted to Lazarus, she prayed for his help, and within an hour she felt the baby kicking again; tests showed a regular heartbeat, and the child was born without complications.
As a martyr he was beatified without a miracle, in 2012.
Why that counted as sanctity
Beatification followed on 2 December 2012. The case of an unborn baby was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 21 February 2020, opening the way to canonisation. Canonisation followed on 15 May 2022 by Francis.
