Dionysius Exiguus

Who they were

Dionysius, who called himself 'the Little' out of humility, was a Scythian by birth who, his friend Cassiodorus says, was a true Roman and thorough Catholic, learned in Greek and Latin and in Scripture.

He governed a monastery in Rome as abbot, translated many Greek works into Latin, and laid the foundations of canon law in the West. He died before 544.

The Catholic Encyclopedia does not describe how he came to be honoured as a saint.

Why that counted as sanctity

A humble monk and scholar who served the whole Church with his learning.
