Who they were
Dionysius was a learned Roman priest, praised by St Dionysius of Alexandria. After the martyrdom of Pope Sixtus II in 258 the Roman See stayed vacant nearly a year because of the persecution; Dionysius was elected on 22 July 259.
Soon after, the Emperor Gallienus ended the persecution, and Dionysius set about restoring the Church's worship, cemeteries and order. He died on 26 or 27 December 268.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
