Who they were
Disibod, an Irish bishop, came to the Continent about 653 and settled in the valley of the Nahe near Bingen. Though he lived as a hermit, a large community gathered round him in Irish beehive cells.
Before his death he saw a church built and served by monks, and was elected abbot-bishop of Mount Disibod. Many miracles are recorded of him. St Hildegard wrote his life in 1170.
