Who they were
Domenico Nicola Mazzarella was born at Frattamaggiore near Naples on 5 September 1802. As Father Modestino of Jesus and Mary, a Friar Minor, he shared the hopes and anguish of the weakest in a society marked by exclusion and suffering.
He was close to every kind of poor and afflicted person, and during an epidemic he caught cholera while assisting the dying and died of it himself.
