Edmund of Abingdon
Archbishop of Canterbury and saint
Feast: 16 November (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Edmund Rich was born at Abingdon about 1180 to devout parents; his mother taught him penance from childhood. At Oxford the Child Christ appeared to him, and he vowed chastity, placing a ring on the finger of Our Lady's statue at St Mary's.
He became Archbishop of Canterbury. At the end of his life he withdrew to the Cistercian abbey of Pontigny, living as a simple religious, and died at Soisy on 16 November 1240.
The miracles
He was canonised within six years of his death; the Catholic Encyclopedia notes numerous miracles at his shrine but does not describe the cause.
Why that counted as sanctity
An archbishop who kept a child's devotion to Christ and Our Lady all his life.
