Who they were
Eduardo Pironio was born in Argentina in 1920. A seminary professor and rector, he took part in the Second Vatican Council as an expert, became a bishop in 1964, and served as secretary and then president of CELAM, the council of Latin American bishops, and as Bishop of Mar del Plata.
Called to Rome, he was made a cardinal in 1976 and led the Vatican offices for religious life and then for the laity, where he championed the new movements and cared above all for young people; his name is linked with the first World Youth Days. Firm but understanding, he put personal relationships first. He died in Rome on 5 February 1998.
The miracles
A baby boy — Mar del Plata, Argentina — 1 December 2006
A boy of eighteen months, at home with his mother, accidentally breathed in and swallowed metallic powder she used for restoration work. He was taken to a clinic in Mar del Plata, where he developed acute poisoning, severe pneumonia from inhaling the powder and stomach contents, and acute respiratory distress. He was healed rapidly, completely and lastingly through the Cardinal's intercession.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a baby boy was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 8 November 2023, opening the way to beatification.
