Who they were
Edvige Carboni was born at Pozzomaggiore, near Sassari in Sardinia, on 2 May 1880. She wanted to enter a convent, but her confessor told her that caring for her family was also serving the Lord, so she stayed home and worked as an embroiderer to put her brothers through school, while teaching the catechism, cleaning the parish church and caring for the poor and sick.
A Franciscan tertiary and a mystic, she is said to have had extraordinary spiritual gifts. She died on 17 February 1952.
The miracles
A stonebreaker — Rome, Italy — 1953–1954
In April 1953 a 45-year-old stonebreaker struck his right big toe with great force. It swelled and reddened, he could not walk, and despite having the nail removed it got worse, with bone infection and a foul, suppurating wound. After about ten months the doctors advised amputating part of the foot, which he flatly refused. A Franciscan friar told his wife to pray to Edvige at a Mass for her on the anniversary of her death, 17 February 1954. She did, and when she got home she found her husband had taken off his bandage: the foot was completely healed. Later tests confirmed he had fully recovered.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a stonebreaker was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 7 November 2018, opening the way to beatification. Beatification followed on June 2019.
